Artifacts

Hydrocal casts on linen, 2023, for JC FabLab at MANA Contemporary, Jersey City, NJ

Artifacts started with a series of experiments in hydrocal casting, and some ideas about take out containers as microcosms of our individual food choices and the larger food economy. But seeing the trial casts I was attracted to them as is – their matte white finish, their weight, the variety of patterns from the containers. To be honest, I’ve been attracted to small boxes and containers since I was a kid, so maybe something like Artifacts was bound to pop out of my head at some point.

The casts seem to me like ghosts of the containers that birthed them. Similar to the artifacts in museums, they may at some point be a haunting presence that is the sole reminder of a lost era, i.e. our era of disposable plastic.
